Nine NM teams start play


Logo FWRL 200x174 New Mexico got off to a fast start in Far West Regional League (FWRL) play with 15 games on the opening weekend. The elite FWRL schedules full round robin play between the very best teams in Region IV--the western region of US Youth Soccer.  Nine New Mexico teams are entered, including five defending state champions and three runners-up.

The Girls U-15 New Mexico Rush Nike got off to the best start, winning three games in Southern California, including a 1-0 victory over Real So Cal White with Victoria Barba scoring the game's only goal. The Rush girls host Slammers and Albion at home in two weeks.

The Elite Gladiators started 2-1 with their single loss coming against Arsenal FC on Saturday afternoon in Temecula, California. The Gladiators, fifth-ranked nationally, bounced back Sunday morning to beat the MVLA Raptors from San Francisco.

The number one team in the nation for Boys U-15 played in Albuquerque over the weekend. Arsenal FC from San Bernadino/Riverside won three games at the State Farm Soccer Complex, including a 3-0 victory over the Argonauts.

This weekend (Mar 14-15, 2009), the Oregon State Champion and runner-up in Boys U-17 will visit New Mexico to play Rio Vista 92 and NM Rush Nike 92, two of our semi-finalists from last year’s State Cup. Games are at the SFSC at 1 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday.
