2012 Region IV ODP Championships

New Mexico ODP has recently returned from competing in the ODP Regional Championships in Phoenix, AZ, Jan 13-17, 2012.  New Mexico sent 4 girls teams ('98, '97, '96, '95) and 3 boys teams ('98, '97 & combined '96-'95).  As a state, we were very competitive in the event and pleased with the performance of all the teams.   Each team produced some memorable performances over the weekend.

  • Our '98 boys were clearly one of the most competitive teams in the event, barely missing out on the opportunity to advance to the quarterfinals with a 1-0 loss to eventual champions Washington. We are excited about the talent in this age group and hopeful for their success in the next few years at the event.
  • Congratulations to our '97 boys for being the only NM team to advance to the quarterfinals.  The '97s looked like a team that could win the whole event through bracket play and unfortunately had quite a few players injured prior to the quarterfinals.
  • A special congratulations to our '96-'95 boys group who finished 2nd at the ODP Regional Championships, only losing one match to eventual champions Cal-South 1-0 in a match that could have gone either way.   It is a great accomplishment to place at this event: well done boys!
  • The '98 girls grew stronger and more confident in each game, capping off the weekend with a  2-1 win over Hawaii.    With 2 wins and 2 losses in bracket play they were not able to advance, but this talented group will only grow stronger each year.
  • The '97 girls had an excellent tournament and were clearly one of the top teams in the event.   With 2 wins, a tie, and one loss, they finished tied for 2nd in their bracket.   Despite a dominating 3-0 win over Nevada on Monday morning, things did not work out and they lost on points to advance to the quarterfinals.
  • The '96 girls were not able to produce the results in a tough bracket that we had all hoped they would.   However the scores did not accurately reflect the effort and hard work this team put in over the weekend.
  • The '95 girls were scheduled to play 6 games in 3 days.  The girls were competitive in each game, winning 2, and eventually running out of gas against eventual champions Cal-South in the final match.

Our older teams were highly recruited during the event, with over 40 college coaches on the girls side and over 30 on the boys.    Schools that came to watch the girls include national champion Stanford, UCLA, Miami, Pepperdine, and many more.   The boys were scouted by University of Washington, Stanford, DII National Champion Ft. Lewis, and many more.

A special congratulations to NM ODP players who were selected to the ODP Region IV Championships All-Tournament Teams - 1st team - Zech Meddelton'98, Christian Herrera'97, CJ Slough '95, Moises Rodriguez '95 and - 2nd team - Irvin Dominguez '97, Corey Carbajal '95, Ricardo Zacarias '95, Samantha Tapia '97, and Jordyn Lacy '98.

Thank you to all team administrators and coaches for helping to make this a successful event.   It is a lot of work on everyone's part to make sure things run smoothly and we appreciate your time and dedication to helping the players.   Thank you!
