2011 ODP Regional ChampionshipsNew Mexico ODP has recently returned from competing in the ODP Regional Championships at the Reach 11 Sports Complex in Phoenix, AZ, Jan. 14-18, 2011. New Mexico sent 4 girls teams ('97, '96, '95, '94) and 2 boys teams ('97 and a combined '94-'96 team).
All of the teams performed well in the event and were competitive in every game. Each team produced some memorable performances over the weekend. The combined '94/'95/'96 boys team put 5 goals past Colorado for a 5-2 victory. In a bracket that included 2 finalists, the '97 boys battled hard in their first experience at Regional Championships and improved each game. The '96 girls also grew stronger each game, capping the weekend off with a dominating 2-0 win over Arizona. The '94 and '95 girls were not able to produce the results they were hoping for, but each team played in front of more than 50 college coaches over the course of the weekend. Some impressive schools that came to watch included defending Division I national champions Notre Dame, runner up Stanford, University of North Carolina, Arizona State University, University of Miami, Portland, and UCLA. The '97 girls had the most success, reaching the semi-finals against Washington. The '97s had to beat Hawaii in their last bracket game to advance to the semis and did so in dramatic fashion, coming back from a 1-0 deficit to win 2-1.
New Mexico ODP would like to send a special congratulations to Kaley Smith, Jordan Harris-Duffer, Corey Carabajal and Moises Rodriguez for being selected to the ODP Regional Championship All-Tournament teams. NMYSA would also like to extend a big thank you to our team administrators, chaperons, and coaching staff for all your hard work for making the trip a success.
